Paul Schwarz, born Vienna June 30th, 1887, died Hamburg Dec. 24th, 1980. At the Stadttheater Hamburg since 1912, he was the foremost comprimario there, though he sang occasionally main roles like Manrico and Tannhäuser. He sang 145 parts in Hamburg (Domingo, beware!), in more than 4,000 performances. Being Jewish, he was forced to retire in 1933, and emigrated to America, but came back to Hamburg immediately after WWII ended, and continued to appear at the Hamburg opera till 1949.
I would like to thank Robert Schlesinger for the recording and notes.
