Appels grew up in orphanage in Amsterdam. He studied medicine and worked as a dentist.
He decided to study singing. He studied in Berlin.
He made his debut during the 1920-1 season (He was 34. Nowadays he would not even start. In Germany the maximun age to he
hired in a choir is 32.) at the Stadttheater in Freiburg i. Breisgau.
His career developed as follows:
1921-22 at the Vereinigten Theatern in Barmen-Elberfeld.
1922-23 at the Stadttheater in Chemnitz.
1923-25 at the Volksoper Berlin.
1925-28 at the Nationaltheater in München.
1928-29 at the Theater in Graz.
1930-34 at the Stadttheater in Kiel.
1934-36 at the Stadttheater in Dortmund.
1938-40 at the Landestheater in Neustrelitz.
