Biographical Notes

Stanislaw Gruszczynski was born near Wilnuis on January 6th.1891. He was probably the best Polish tenor ever. After a long period of vocal lessons and listening to a lot of records of the best tenors of the time, he made his debut as Radames at the Warsaw Opera on March 21st 1916. Later, Stanislaw Gruszczynski sang in Germany, Spain and Italy. Only in Italy, he failed to achieve success. He went back to Poland, and was the first tenor at the Warsaw Opera. He had excellent acting abilities. In 1931 after a relatively brief but very tiring career, he left the Warsaw Opera. His voice was gone. He acquired a taste for drinking and died in poverty in 1959. Among his best roles were Lohengrin, Tristan, Siegfried, Parsifal, Radames, Chenier, Manrico, and Jontek.
I wish to thank Vladimir Efimenko for the picture, biographical notes and recordings (For all eternity , Otello).
