He began his career as an actor on various stages of Hungary. In 1963 he became a member of the National Opera of Budapest, interpreting
Bardolfo in Verdi’s Falstaff. He sang small roles for years, until his tremendous vocal range and the inner tension of his performances burst
these narrow limits and he found his place among the leading dramatic tenors. He performed the roles of Turiddu, Kalaf, Canio,
Manrico, Otello, Radames, among others.
