Kelen made his debut as a scholarship holder at the Budapest Opera House in 1972, then became a member of the House in 1973. Kelen is a regular guest singer at the theatres abroad, appeared at La Scala and the Wiener Staatsoper, too. He became Merited Artist in 1981, then Eminent Artist in 1989.

His most important roles are: Edgar, Don José, Don Carlos, Alfred, Lensky, Faust (Gounod).
