Born 1956 in Košice (Slovakia)-
Štefan Margita was born in the Slovak city of Kosice where he studied at the conservatory
and obtained his first operatic engagement. Having won first prize in the singing competition at
Teplice in 1984, he embarked on parallel career as a concert singer, in the following year appearing at the Prague Spring
Festival, in Bach's Magnificat. Winning a singing competition
organized as part of that festival's 1986 edition earned him
an engagement with the Prague National Theatre. In 1987, he became
soloist of the Wiener Volksoper, and subsequent years have seen him
as Ottavio at Stuttgart and Berlin. His stage repertoire covers
works, including notably Czech operas (Smetana, Dvorak,
Janacek,Martinu), as well as lirical parts in the international
repertoire, in operas by Beethoven, Donizetti, Verdi, and Tchaikovsky.
