I'm sending three recordings of him, since he was certainly one of the important tenors of the 20th century and needs to be accordingly documented on the site (though I don't hesitate to admit that for me, he is definitely a "little empathy" tenor - while the voice is extraordinarily beautiful, and the technique secure, I doubt his musicality: to me, everything he sings is sounding the same, stylistically, from Mozart to Lehár, but nothing sounds as it should - he makes every style of music sound like "Pataky", but that's my personal opinion; there are actually opera connoisseurs whose favourite tenor he happens to be). To be fair, I'm sending three recordings that are no doubt of good quality. The latest of them, En fermant, is a rather rare Hungarian wartime recording; for me, this is his best effort. For the readers, it may be useful to add short biographical notes: born November 14th, 1896, he spent his early years at the Budapest opera; from 1926, he was a member of the Vienna Staatsoper, and from 1939 of the Scala of Milan. During WWII, he returned to Hungary, contrary to what some sources claim, that he emigrated to South America - which he in fact did, but AFTER the war. He then lived as as teacher in Santiago de Chile. Died in March 1964 in Los Angeles.
