Biographical Notes

Cornel Stavru was born on August 31st, 1929 in Constance (Romania). Stavru studied engineering at the Bucharest polytechnic school, and studied singing at the Bucharest Conservatoire with the famous teachers A.Costescu-Duca and A.Colfescu. Stavru made his debut at the Bucharest national opera in 1958 as Manrico, and up to the middle 80s was the first tenor at that theatre. His best roles included Turiddu, Canio, José, Otello, Cavaradossi, Walter, and Tannhäuser. Cornel Stavru went on tour to Belgium, Greece, all over Eastern Europe. He has recorded a lot for Electrecord, including complete operas (Trovatore, Tosca and Pagliacci).
