Fritz Wolff - born Oct. 28th, 1894, Munich, died Jan. 18th, 1957, ibidem. First an army officer, studied singing after WWI. His debut took place at the Bayreuth festival in 1925 as Loge, which was to always be his most famous role. His was a member of the theatres of Hagen, Chemnitz, and the Berliner Staatsoper from 1928 on. Many guest appearances (Vienna, London, Paris, Prague, Budapest, Chicago, Cleveland). Had to retire after 1942 since he was almost blind then. Contradictory to his important career, he made few recordings; this one is his best-known, and he's certainly not up to Kipnis' standard here.
I wish to thank Robert Schlesinger for the recording and notes.
