His family went to the United States in 1914, studied singing in Boston, but returned to Italy during the war and made debut in Savona in 1918 in "Lucia di Lammermoor", sang at all the great italian opera houses,in 1927 he married the great primadonna Lina Pagliughi (1907-1980), they sang often together especialy on tour through Europe (popular in the Netherlands & Germany) but Lyana Grani was also a member of this company, this explains the confusion that it must be Pagliughi on these film, but in 1932 Lina was so fat due to a glande illness that she never was filmed. In 1947 she sang Rigoletto on the soundtrack of the movie with Tito Gobbi. They never separated and ended their careers in giving singing lessons. Montanari made records for HMV.
