Comments on strange recordings by Robert Schlesinger:
Claudio Villa's live recording, which is completely nuts, the accompaniment being the apotheosis of bad taste; his singing, though, while clearly past the prime and far from being perfect, is not that bad and certainly incomparably better than the four nobodies (Carrisi, Gomez, Jacocks, Potts). By the way, both Gomez and Villa thought the aria as written by Puccini wasn't long enough, and corrected the composer's "mistake"... And as for Al Bano, the German wikipedia has a Nessun dorma entry that mentions only three singers who are supposedly famous for their renditions: inevitably Pavarotti, then a certain Paul Potts (who the hell is Paul Potts?? the winner of the TV show "Britain has talent" in 2006), and Albano Carrisi... it's a strange world indeed. Albano Carrisi, on the other hand, sang live in an operetta concert in Bad Ischl/Austria a few years ago, with José Carreras, Eva Lind, and Thomas Hampson, and he had a bigger voice than Hampson and proved a better tenor than Carreras (I know, it's not difficult, and no, he didn't prove a GOOD tenor - just better than Carreras). Hadn't he chosen to earn much money as a pop singer, he would have ended up singing Radames and Calaf in Vercelli, Sassuolo or Reggio Calabria.
